Guacamole

This guacamole recipe is so simple to make and is sure to be a crowd favorite! It is full of fresh ingredients and is ready in just a few minutes.

Whether you are making your favorite Mexican food or grilling burgers, this guacamole is the perfect addition! Add this guacamole to burritos, tacos, sandwiches, or even dip french fries into it. We also love to top in on our Layered Mexican Dip or just serve it with tortilla chips. I make this recipe at least once a week in our house and it is always gone in seconds!

How to Pick your Avocados

The first step to making the perfect guacamole is to ensure your avocados are ripe. Ripe avocados will give a little when you lightly squeeze them. They will also be dark green in color and will feel a little bumpy. If they are rock-hard, they are underripe. If they feel mushy, then they are overripe.

I typically purchase avocados that are underripe and then allow them to ripen on the counter for a few days. Also try to buy avocados that still have the stem attached; they are less likely to have brown spots on the inside. Once your avocados are ripe, if you are not planning to use them that day, they can be stored uncut in the fridge for up to three days.

How to Make Guacamole

Start by prepping all of your ingredients. Dice the red onion and tomato, finely chop the cilantro, and seed and dice the jalapeño (wear gloves!). Next, cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the insides into a medium bowl. Mash the avocados to your desired consistency using a fork or a potato masher. I find that a fork works just fine. To the bowl, add in all of the ingredients that you prepped as well as lime juice, cumin, garlic powder, sea salt, and pepper. Mix well and serve!

Storing Guacamole

If you have any leftovers or want to make this recipe in advance, spoon the guacamole into an airtight container. Before putting the lid on, place a piece of plastic wrap directly on the guacamole and press it down to keep the air out. Cover with the lid and store in the refrigerator for up to two days.

Substitutions and Variations

Onion – I prefer to use red onion, but you can also use white onion instead.

Jalapeño – If you would like the guac to be spicier, you can add in the other half of the jalapeño, or add the seeds for some serious heat. To make the guac less spicy, or kid friendly, leave out the jalapeño.

Lime Juice – Freshly squeezed lime juice helps give the guac that fresh flavor. If you only have bottled lime juice it will still taste delicious, just use about 1/2 tablespoon.
